Grow Your Self Confidence

What Do We Mean By Self Confidence?

Let’s start this blog topic with a definition of terms.  What do we mean by “self confidence”?  According to Princeton University’s netweb, it means “freedom from doubt, belief in yourself and your abilities”.  Although that sounds simple it can actually be very difficult to achieve.  Self confidence is often something we recognize in others and are drawn to, yet at the very moment we recognize it in others, we often are extremely aware of the lack of it in ourselves. Self confidence affects every aspect of our lives.  It colors our job performance, it influences our relationships with our friends and families.

It is rare to find someone who is genuinely self confident across all areas of life.  We are human and therefore fallible, however self confidence is an internal characteristic that can be developed over time. Some people develop self confidence at an early age due, supposedly, to a loving and accepting parenting style.  Others may develop confidence through successful endeavors. Yet many continue to be plagued by self doubt even in the face of success.  Why?

I’m sure  psychologists have many answers to this question.  Some of them might even be true.  What I do know is that self confidence can be learned. It must, however, also be EARNED.  What I mean by this is that you must prove to yourself that you can do things. You can learn many skills in life. All it takes is some effort and some time. The important part comes next.  You must appreciate your own efforts and the results they create.  You must value your self for the progress you make.  You must look inward for this validation and not outward.  That is the difficult part.

Many of us seek appreciation in the eyes of others when our own self acceptance and self esteem are all that really matters.  So how do we grow self-confidence?  Like anything else it is a process  that unfolds over time.  It starts with assessment; where are you, where do you want to be.  Self confidence develops from solid achievement, so you will need focus and determination as well as a plan. It also helps to have a positive mindset.

Remember that to grow your self confidence is a process and a journey.  It will take time and energy. Be accepting of occasional setbacks and keep moving forward. Focus. Breathe. Trust.
